SEPTA renames University City Station

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) earlier this week entered into a five-year, $3.3 million agreement with Penn Medicine to rename the University City rail station in West Philadelphia.

Kansas City Streetcar logs 2 million riders in 2019

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority recorded 2,228,942 riders in 2019, a 5.5 increase compared with 2018's ridership level. 

In 2019, streetcar ridership was highest on the weekends, authority officials said in a press release.

House railroad subcommittee slates hearing on grade crossing safety

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials will hold a hearing next week on the topic of grade crossing safety.Titled “Tracking Toward Zero: Improving Grade Crossing Safety and Addressing Community Concerns," the hearing will be held at 10 a.m. (EST) Feb. 5 at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., according to a press release issued by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.The hearing's purpose will be to learn from stakeholders about current challenges affecting grade crossing safety, trespassing and suicide incidents, blocked grade crossings, as well as efforts to mitigate safety and community concerns of those issues.U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) chairs the subcommittee. North Texas transit agencies to study ridership patterns

Dallas-Fort Worth transit agencies together will launch a regionwide survey next month to gauge ridership demand and patterns on the region's rail system. 

The survey is funded by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) and Trinity Metro.

New York state lawmakers introduce bill to mandate two-person train crews

Two New York state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require all freight trains to have a minimum of two-person crews.

State Senate Bill S7151 was introduced earlier this month by State Sen. Timothy Kennedy (D) and a companion bill was introduced by State Assemblyman William Magnarelli (D), according to a press release issued by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLET).

The Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program (CREATE) partners announced this week that CSX has selected Mathewson Right of Way Co. to provide right-of-way acquisition services for two projects that are part of the 75th Street Corridor improvement project.

Mathewson will serve a portion of the Forest Hill Flyover project and the 71st Street grade separation project, CREATE officials said in a press release.

OLI receives renewed Posner Foundation funding

Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) has received renewed grant funding for its rail safety education efforts in 2020 from the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, the rail safety group announced earlier this week.The grant will continue and expand the support of rail safety projects and initiatives that the Posner Foundation helped to fund in 2019. “The 2020 grant will allow us to expand our work at the national level and support our state programs across the country,” OLI Executive Director Rachel Maleh said in a press release, which did not mention the 2020 grant's dollar amount.Specifically, the 2020 funds will support the expanded distribution of an public service announcement (PSA) campaign aimed at reducing near-miss incidents with pedestrians near railroad tracks; supplement funding for state programs; and create a new discretionary fund to assist state programs with purchasing educational and promotional materials for their outreach efforts.In 2019, the Posner Foundation donated $100,000 to OLI. The funds helped support the creation of media-related resources and distribution of a PSA about emergency notification system signs, as well as supplemented funding for state programs and provided support for national volunteer efforts.

VIA Rail names engineer to analyze proposed high-frequency rail project

VIA Rail Canada Inc. has selected a joint venture formed by AECOM and Arup as the owner’s engineer (OE) to analyze a proposed high-frequency rail service in the Quebec City-Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor.

The joint venture will support VIA Rail and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) in all technical and engineering matters during the pre-procurement phase of the project. Engineering and technical analysis is required for the project to receive final recommendation, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.

U.S. freight-rail traffic slump continues

U.S. railroads hauled 485,282 carloads and intermodal units during the week ending Jan. 25, a 6.7 percent decrease in traffic compared with the same week in 2019, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.

Six of the 10 carload commodity groups that AAR tracks on a weekly basis posted increases. They included metallic ores and metals, up 1,064 carloads to 20,918; grain, up 288 carloads to 21,723; and miscellaneous carloads, up 234 carloads to 8,474.

NS assisted 77 rail-served industrial projects in 2019

Norfolk Southern Railway worked with 77 businesses that opened new or expanded facilities on its rail lines in 2019, the Class I announced today.NS customers across 16 states invested nearly $2 billion to develop 54 new and 23 expanded rail-served commercial projects, company officials said in a press release.The investment is expected to generate more than 62,300 carloads of new rail traffic annually for NS, they said."Industrial development activity in 2019 reflected modest, but steady, growth across our service area," said Chris Ingraham, assistant vice president of industrial development. "We saw a balanced mix of projects across our business markets, including chemicals, agriculture, metals and construction, and forest and consumer products. Going into 2020, we're encouraged as project activity remains steady and productive."Among the largest development projects last year were a fertilizer facility in Aurora, North Carolina; a butane export plant in Chesapeake, Virginia; a tissue manufacturing plant in Macon, Georgia; an asphalt facility in Chickasaw, Alabama; and an auto frame warehouse in Maumee, Ohio. NS works with customers and state and local economic development leaders to identify suitable rail-served sites and develop infrastructure that connects industrial development projects to its rail network. The Class I's industrial development department provides free and free and confidential facility-location services, including industrial park planning, site layout, track design and supply-chain analysis. Over the past 10 years, NS has participated in locating or expanding 974 industrial facilities that represent private investment of nearly $62 billion, company officials said.

MTA to begin work on $8.8B worth of construction projects

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has scheduled $8.8 billion worth of construction projects from the 2010-2014 and 2015-2019 capital plans to begin this year and next, the New York City agency announced yesterday.

The MTA anticipates committing $6.5 billion worth of prior plan capital program work in 2020 and $2.3 billion in 2021, which will effectively exhaust all resources from the 2010-14 and 2015-19 plans.

House Democrats unveil $760B infrastructure plan

U.S. House Democratic leaders yesterday released the framework for a new $760 billion proposal to address the nation's growing infrastructure needs, including those related to rail.

Chairmen of the House committees on Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I), Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means unveiled the plan, dubbed "Moving America and the Environment Forward," which they said would address the nation's massive infrastructure maintenance backlog and undertake projects that are "smarter, safer and made to last," according to a joint press release issued by the committees.

Thales and Piper Networks completed a nine-month pilot of ultra-sideband (UWB) technology on MTA New York City Transit’s (NYCT) Flushing subway line. The pilot demonstrated the potential for UWB positioning technologies to integrate seamlessly with communications-based train control to improve system reliability and the speed of delivery for upgraded signaling systems, NYCT officials said in a press release.

Positive train control (PTC) was in operation on 98.5 percent of the required Class I route miles at the end of 2019, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) announced yesterday.

The nation's largest railroads remain on track to meet the federally mandated deadline of Dec. 31, 2020, for full PTC implementation, with several railroads already operating it across their entire required PTC footprint, AAR officials said in a press release.
