Last year, Metro Transit served a record number of riders across all three of its rail lines in and around the Twin Cities.

The agency logged a record 13.1 million rides on the Green Line light-rail route, along with a record 10.7 million rides on Blue Line light-rail trains. Ridership on the latter line topped the previous high-water mark set in 2015.

NTSB: Amtrak engineer missed speed-limit sign before train derailed

The engineer of the Amtrak Cascades train missed seeing a speed-limit sign before the train derailed from an overpass in Washington state last month, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced yesterday.

NTSB investigators interviewed the train's engineer and a conductor the week of Jan. 15, about a month after the fatal derailment killed three passengers and injured dozens of others. The engineer and conductor, who were in the lead locomotive during the Dec. 16 accident, were unable to be interviewed until recently because of their injuries.

CN police ratify new contract; BMWED organizes SunRail MOW workers

CN announced yesterday that members of the Canadian National Railway Police Association (CNRPA) have ratified a new collective agreement with the Class I.The agreement is effective Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2023. It covers CN police officers across Canada."The new agreement, its strong ratification and the process of negotiating it underscore the effectiveness of the dialogue our association has with the company. That being said, this would never have been possible without our members' ongoing support," said CNRPA National Secretary Wayne Telcs in a press release.Meanwhile, Bombardier Transportation maintenance-of-way (MOW) employees working on Florida's SunRail commuter-rail line voted last week to join the Allied Federation/Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED).The 20-member MOW group is based in Sanford, Florida. Official certification of the vote is expected this week, BMWED officials said in a press release.

ARCI: Mixed results for Q4 car orders, deliveries

Rail-car orders in fourth-quarter 2017 totaled 8,501 units compared with 8,671 units in the third quarter and 4,866 units in fourth-quarter 2016, according to quarterly statistics released this week by the Railway Supply Institute's American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI).

Car deliveries in Q4 2017 rose to 13,404 units from 11,015 units in Q3. Deliveries for Q2 and Q1 came in at 10,625 and 10,042 units, respectively.

U.S. rail traffic declined 2.9 percent in Week 3

Total U.S. railroad traffic declined 2.9 percent to 508,239 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Jan. 20 compared with the same week a year ago, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Total carloads for the week fell 7.6 percent to 241,258 units, but intermodal volume ticked up 1.8 percent to 266,981 containers and trailers compared with the third week of 2017, AAR reported in a press release.

Construction began early this month on Brazos Yard in Robertson County, Texas. Union Pacific says the $550-million yard is the largest capital investment in a single facility in its history.

UP says Brazos Yard is the first classification yard to be built in more than a generation and will showcase best practices in operating efficiency, technology and innovation. The yard is scheduled to be completed in 2020 and will have the capacity to switch up to 1,300 rail cars per day, making it one of the highest capacity yards on Union Pacific's 23-state network.

Las Vegas Railway Express acquires United Rail

The Las Vegas Railway Express Inc. has acquired United Rail, owner of the Rail Management Services short-line management package.RMS will become the primary business for the Las Vegas company, which will seek short lines to use the system for their business management backbone. Las Vegas Railway Express owns the X Train brand and brand licensor."By affiliating under our United Rail brand and deploying the RMS system, we can offer access to capital, discounts on insurance products and much more via our larger purchasing footprint to our X Train affiliates," said Las Vegas Railway Express Chief Executive Officer Wayne Bailey in a press release. Affiliate short lines using RMS only will pay for the services they use, according to the release. The system currently is in use by X Rail Entertainment Inc. on its X Wine Railroad service. It's also slated to be used for future Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas service, which is slated to start in June. Financial details of the acquisition weren't disclosed.Las Vegas Railway Express is working to acquire short lines that have freight and/or passenger operations. The company has licensed X Rail Entertainment Inc. to use the X Train brand on the X Wine Railroad luxury passenger service.

FTA delays deadline for BART Silicon Valley project

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) received approval from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to extend the New Starts project development phase for the 6-mile Bay Area Rapid Transit extension to Silicon Valley.

The deadline to complete the phase has been moved from March to June. VTA made the request so it could refine design considerations for two tunneling methods for the 5-mile segment into downtown San Jose, California, agency officials said in a press release.
