The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) presented the 2017 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence to BNSF and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for the Improvements for Passenger Rail Service and Reliability on BNSF Railway in Washington State project.

BNSF worked with WSDOT on the line between Blaine, Wash., near the U.S. Canadian border and Vancouver, Wash., to bring improvements focused on enhancing passenger rail service and ensuring a consistent level of freight operations through the region.

Washington, DC— September 15, 2017 – The Association of American Railroads (AAR) honored the late Scott Carey of BatesCarey LLP with the 2017 David W. Fries Award for exemplary risk management efforts and practices in the railroad industry. The award was presented to his wife, Patricia, and oldest daughter, Ashley, at the Railroad Insurance Management Association's (RIMA) annual meeting recently held in Washington, DC.

"It is with mixed emotions that I present this year's David W. Fries Award," said Kevin Burrin of BNSF. "While I am pleased to be honoring such a deserving individual, I am saddened that I don't have the opportunity to congratulate him personally and shake his hand one more time due to his untimely passing earlier this year.  For almost 40 years, Scott Carey was at the forefront of transportation and railroad liability claims.  He was a guiding force in his law firm, BatesCarey LLP, becoming one of the most prestigious and highly regarded transportation coverage firms in the nation.  He wrote or edited much of the policy language used by the railroad industry, ensuring his legacy will continue for many years."

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) late last week opened its renovated 53rd Street R Line subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The station now features enhanced LED lighting, Wi-Fi connectivity, new digital displays, USB ports and countdown clocks to give real-time arrival information. Other upgrades include wayfinding floor tiles for the visually impaired, new handrails, stair treads, wall tiles and granite flooring.

Metra yesterday unveiled a new locomotive wrap to commemorate 40 years of continuous passenger service with its F40PH locomotives.

The Chicago Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) began taking delivery of its first set of F40PH locomotives in 1977. The agency started off with 28 of those units and eventually grew the fleet to 118. EMD developed the model and produced more than 500 of the units for the North American market.

The South Carolina Ports Authority yesterday welcomed to Charleston Harbor the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt, the biggest ship to transit the Panama Canal and call on U.S. East Coast ports.

The 1,200-foot CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt — which has a capacity of 14,400 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) — arrived on the heels of the first construction contract for the Charleston Harbor deepening project being awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, port officials said in a press release.

Canadian National (CN) and Metra workers are set to replace track this weekend on the Rock Island Line.

Crews will begin the replacement late Saturday evening, with busses available for riders between 35th Street and LaSalle Street stations. Rock Island trains may be delayed en route due to speed restrictions near the project Saturday evening and on Sunday morning, Sept. 17.

Amtrak yesterday launched a new marketing campaign that takes aim at inconveniences travelers may face when journeying by car or plane.

Dubbed "Break the Travel Quo," the campaign features ads that highlight some of the "realities of air and car travel that have become par for the course," Amtrak officials said in a press release.

Michael Ward, who retired earlier this year as chairman and chief executive officer of CSX Corp., has been appointed to coal supplier Contura Energy Inc.'s board.

Ward spent 40 years at CSX and its predecessor company, Chessie System Inc. Most recently, he was the Class I's chairman and CEO from 2003 until his retirement. He was succeeded as CEO by E. Hunter Harrison.

The Port of Los Angeles registered a record-breaking August for container volume, marking the port's second-best month in its 110-year history, port officials announced Wednesday.

Container volume climbed 6.1 percent to 847,857 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August compared with the same month a year ago. The port’s busiest-ever month was November 2016, when it registered 877,564 TEUs.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has received 82 unsolicited proposals to improve its services.

Of that total, the agency has reviewed 75. Five are still being reviewed, while 22 have advanced to a "more detailed analysis" phase, the agency's blog reported yesterday.

U.S. railroads' total carload volume fell 1.9 percent during the week ending Sept. 9, but total railroad volumes ticked up 0.8 percent thanks to a 3.6 percent increase in intermodal traffic compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week.

U.S. roads moved 247,930 carloads and 238,544 intermodal containers and trailers during the week, according to an AAR press release.
