Progressive Railroading names 2018 Rising Stars Award honorees

Today, Progressive Railroading announces the 20 people chosen for recognition as the 2018 Rising Stars of the North American railroad industry.

This is the sixth year that Progressive Railroading has sponsored the Rising Stars Awards program. The magazine defines a Rising Star as someone under the age of 40 who has made, or is making, a positive impact on his or her company, organization, department or team, and is viewed by others — peers, colleagues, supervisors, clients or associates — as an up-and-coming leader in the rail industry.

U.S. Sen. Klobuchar tours Loram's Minnesota plant

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) yesterday joined rail industry stakeholders for a tour of Loram Maintenance of Way Inc.'s manufacturing facility in Hamel, Minnesota.

The tour group included representatives from Loram, United Steelworkers Local 2002-9, Operation Lifesaver Inc., Amtrak and local Minnesota railroads. During Klobuchar's visit, the group discussed rail safety programs and continued economic development in greater Minneapolis, according to a press release issued by the Railway Engineering-Maintenance and Suppliers Association (REMSA).

Rail supplier news from Cubic, Siemens, Willamette Valley, Spectrum and Brookville (March 29)

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) last week finalized a $699.19 million contract with a Cubic-John Laing consortium for the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of a new automated fare collection system. Known as AFC 2.0, the system will enable riders to use smartphones or contactless credit cards to pay fares. The technology also will help speed up boarding times and reduce lines for Green Line trains, MBTA officials said in a press release. The new system will be available on all transit modes to allow for easy transfers. The system's initial elements will be implemented in late 2019, with full implementation by mid-2020. By 2021, the MBTA will retire its existing fare system.

In fiscal-year 2017, Siemens boosted its U.S. research-and-development investment by $175 million to $1.3 billion, marking a 16 percent increase over the prior year. The company has placed a "strong focus on digital innovation" with its investments, Siemens officials said in a press release. For instance, in Chicago, the company is investing $13 million annually in a new digital R&D hub focused on cloud and Internet of Things applications to support the building management and automation market. Globally, Siemens aims to spend $6.9 billion on R&D in FY2018, up from $6.3 billion in FY2017.

UP slates $59 million for Utah track, bridge projects

In the latest of its state-by-state capital expenditure announcements, Union Pacific Railroad officials said this week the Class I will spend $59.3 million on track and bridge projects this year in Utah.UP's investments will include $54.1 million to maintain track and $123,000 to maintain bridges in the state, according to a UP press release.Key projects this year will include $13 million to replace 28 miles of rail along the Lakeside subdivision west of the Great Salt Lake; $11 million to replace more than 100,500 ties between Delta and Milford; and $10 million to replace 22 miles of rail along the Shaftner subdivision east of Wendover.Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $244.7 million to strengthen its infrastructure in Utah.

In February, crosstie production rose 9.4 percent to 1.4 million units and purchases soared 15.7 percent to 1.8 million units from January levels, according to the Railway Tie Association's (RTA) monthly report.However, compared with year-ago levels, production in February fell 21.6 percent, while purchases skyrocketed 49.3 percent.For the first two months of this year, production dropped 27.1 percent to 2.69 million units, while purchases climbed 35.4 percent to 3.4 million units compared with the same period in 2017."Purchases are in an upward trend at a 5 percent annual rate," RTA officials stated in the report. "Production is trending lower and is down by a 26.3 percent annual rate."

FRA seeks input on railroad industry automation

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is soliciting public comments on the future of automation in the railroad industry.The agency is requesting information and comments from industry stakeholders, the public, local and state governments, and other interested parties on the potential benefits, costs, risks and challenges to implementing automated railroad operations, according to a notice posted on the FRA website.FRA officials also are seeking input on how the agency "can best support the railroad industry's development and implementation of new and emerging technologies in automation that could lead to safety improvements or increased efficiencies in railroad operations," the notice states.The deadline for submitting responses is May 7.

California panel OKs funds for proposed light-rail line

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has allocated $482 million for transportation projects in the Los Angeles area, including a potential light-rail line in the East San Fernando Valley.

The commission approved the funds through the State Transportation Improvement Program. CTC set aside $202 million for the East San Fernando Valley transit project, which could involve building a light-rail line or bus rapid transit route.

U.S. rail traffic up slightly in Week 12

U.S. railroads posted a 1.4 percent increase in traffic for the week ending March 24 compared with the same week last year, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.

Total carloads for the week rose 2.5 percent to 265,756 units, while total intermodal volume inched up 0.3 percent to 260,765 containers and trailers compared with volumes in the same week in 2017.

Union Pacific Railroad has named TRAC Interstar its preferred national provider of emergency road service in the United States. Motor carriers can select TRAC Interstar when calling UP's road service number. The agreement went into effect March 12. A subsidiary of TRAC Intermodal, TRAC Interstar provides emergency road service repair solutions for intermodal and commercial trucking industries. The company's call center uses a proprietary dispatch system to provide quick response times and comprehensive repair services, TRAC Intermodal officials said in a press release.Bombardier Transportation has received an order from Transport for London (TfL) for five additional Aventra trains on the Elizabeth Line. The new units bring TfL's total order to 70 trains. The $104 million agreement also includes an expansion of an existing train services agreement to cover the new units, Bombardier officials said in a press release. Slated to open in December, the Elizabeth Line will connect Reading and Heathrow International Airport in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. The additional trains will enable TfL to serve all terminals at Heathrow and provide more frequent service.BSM Technologies and Lat-Lon LLC next month will present the BSM Technology Innovation Award to Don Loftis, principal software engineer at Olin Corp. The honor recognizes leadership and innovation in implementing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in the rail industry. Loftis aggregates multiple asset data inputs within Olin and assesses large amounts of data in pursuit of improving ride quality and safety in rail, BSM officials said in a press release. Over the past decade, Loftis also has been focused on crisis management in rail and developing optimal track-and-trace solutions for his company. BSM will present the award at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's Connections Show on April 8.Peerless Electronics Inc. has signed an agreement to distribute DRI's product line, which includes electromechanical hermetically sealed relays, time delay devices, and mating sockets. Peerless' knowledge of the transportation, aerospace and military markets align with those at DRI, said Peerless Electronics President William Gallucci in a press release. Peerless also will provide products and value-added services. The company is a distributor of switches, relays and circuit breaker products.

BART arrests soared 40 percent in 2017

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) yesterday released its 2017 crime data showing a nearly 40 percent surge in arrests compared to 2016.

In 2017, BART police officers made 1,730 arrests versus 1,238 arrests in the previous year.

NICTD mulls South Shore Line fare hike to cover PTC costs

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) is considering a 5 percent fare increase for the South Shore Line to help pay for positive train control (PTC) implementation.

The proposal would include a 50-cent increase in the price of a one-way ticket from Chicago to Hammond, Indiana. The price hike would apply to all stations except the stop in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. Metra controls fares for that station.

McClellan, who in his new role will report to NS President and Chief Executive Officer James Squires, joined NS in 1998 as assistant VP performance planning. He became VP intermodal and automotive marketing in 2000 and VP industrial products in 2013.

BNSF slates $230 million for California capex projects

BNSF Railway Co. has planned $230 million in capital expenditures this year to expand capacity and perform scheduled maintenance work in California.

BNSF, which operates a 2,000-mile network in California, will install additional production track and new lift equipment at the Los Angeles Intermodal Facility, and extend the existing north lead track to improve switching capability at the Stockton Intermodal Facility.

Georgia Ports Authority and other officials on Monday broke ground on the $127 million Mason Mega Rail Terminal.

The project will increase the Port of Savannah's rail lift capacity to 1 million containers per year, and open new markets that will span an arc of cities from Memphis, Tennessee, to St. Louis, and from Chicago to Cincinnati, port officials said in a press release.

Milwaukee receives first streetcar from Brookville

The city of Milwaukee yesterday took delivery of the first vehicle for its new streetcar system.

The 67-foot, 83,000-pound streetcar arrived from Brookville Equipment Corp.'s plant in Brookville, Pennsylvania. The unit, which rolled off a truck in downtown Milwaukee, will be stored in the streetcar system's operations and maintenance facility on N. 4th Street.
