The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) last week marked its 50th anniversary.
On July 1, 1968, the agency was established as the Urban Mass Transportation Administration to provide federal assistance for mass transit projects. In the 1970s, the administration's resources were broadened with the creation of an annual formula grant program through the National Mass Transportation Assistance Act.
That expansion helped struggling transit agencies restore and grow service, according to a summary of the agency's history on the FTA's website.
In 1991, the agency was renamed the Federal Transit Administration to reflect its reach into rural areas and its focus on ensuring mobility for all Americans, including people with disabilities. That same year, Congress allowed the use of highway program funds for public transportation.
FTA now provides more than $12 billion each year to support and expand public transit systems, according to the agency's site.
