AAR: U.S. railroads logged slight volume dip in Week 44

U.S. railroads handled 538,739 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending Nov. 4., marking a 0.8 percent decrease compared with traffic in the same week last year.

Total carloads for the week were down 1.7 percent to 266,652, while intermodal volume inched up 0.01 percent to 272,087 containers and trailers, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported yesterday.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County has appointed Katharine Eagan Kelleman chief executive officer.

She succeeds interim CEO David Donahoe, who took over after Ellen McLean stepped down from the job in June. Kelleman, who most recently served as CEO of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) in Florida, will start the new job in January.

Wisconsin & Southern obtains state funding for rail bridge project

Wisconsin & Southern Railroad has been awarded over $5 million in state grant and loan funding for a bridge reconstruction project in Crawford County, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced last week.

The railroad will receive a $4.5 million grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's (WisDOT) Freight Railroad Preservation Program to cover 80 percent of the cost to reconstruct a rail bridge located near Wauzeka in a slough of the Wisconsin River, state officials said in a WisDOT press release.

U.S. short lines operated a full year without experiencing a fatality, the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) announced yesterday.

The achievement is a milestone for the industry and its 603 short lines, which focus on making every day a safe one, said ASLRRA President Linda Bauer Darr.

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) this weekend will halt service between the Patchogue and Montauk stations to continue modernizing its signal system.

Between Nov. 10 and Nov. 13, crews will install a high-capacity electric signal system along that segment of LIRR's Montauk Branch.

South Carolina Ports logged record October volume

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has logged its strongest October on record, handling 184,804 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the month.

The volume represented a 10 percent increase from October 2016. The authority observed growth across several segments, with particular strength in export loaded containers, said SCPA President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Newsome in a press release.
