Kansas City Southern has renamed its intermodal facility in Wylie, Texas, after former KCS President and Chief Executive Officer David Starling.

In a ceremony held last week, KCS board members dedicated the David L. Starling Wylie Intermodal Terminal, which opened for operations in July 2015 to serve domestic and international intermodal customers.

The event featured more than 50 educational and technical sessions, and 126 exhibits. It drew nearly 1,300 attendees, according to RSI.

Given the timing of the event — the third quarter had just ended, summer’s sunnier shades had begun to slip into the grey-golds of fall — talk of turning calendar pages colored a number of the conversations I had, particularly in the exhibit hall.

While some rail-industry suppliers said they’d seen signs of year-end light from Class Is moving grain and auto parts, others told me they’d essentially given up the ghost on the rest of 2016. Instead, they were looking ahead — many optimistically — to what they hoped would be a better 2017.

Kansas City Southern and Kansas City Southern de Mexico hosted a symposium in Houston last week on how the railroads' cross-border network is serving Mexico's growing energy market.The symposium addressed topics aimed at customers and service providers seeking to do business with Mexico's energy market. Participants included energy shippers and transportation providers from throughout North America, KCS officials said in a press release.Topics included an overview of new regulations and what they mean for the market; railroad infrastructure capacity and consistent, reliable and flexible service capabilities to handle current and future traffic; safety and security programs to move products; and the practical aspects of importing fuel to Mexico."KCS and KCSM are well-positioned to transport refined products cross-border. Metra approves 2017 budget with fare increase to pay for capital needs

The Metra Board of Directors approved the agency's 2017 budget, which includes a fare increase that will fund needed capital requirements.

The $1.06 billion budget provides $781.2 million for operating costs and $279.5 million for capital improvements in 2017. The budget increases fare revenue by 5.8 percent to generate $16.1 million for the agency's huge capital needs.

PANYNJ proposes $6 billion operating and capital budget for 2017

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has proposed a $6 billion 2017 operating and capital budget.

The 2017 PANYNJ proposed operating budget of $3.1 billion will fund ongoing operations, maintenance and security at all agency facilities and provides for the first full year of operations at the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, retail complex and other World Trade Center facilities which opened in phases in 2016.

FEIS issued for Sound Transit extension to Federal Way

Sound Transit and the Federal Transit Administration issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Federal Way Link light-rail extension, which would extend light rail south from Angle Lake in the city of SeaTac to the Federal Way Transit Center.

The FEIS addresses comments on the 2015 Draft Environmental Impact Statement. It provides a detailed look at the project benefits, potential impacts and mitigation measures as the Sound Transit Board considers the route and station locations to be built for the 7.6-mile line.
