CN, Teamsters tentatively agree on contract for locomotive engineers

CN and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) have reached a tentative agreement to renew their contract covering 1,700 locomotive engineers in Canada.Details of the agreement are being withheld until TCRC members ratify the contract, a process expected to take 60 days, according to a CN press release."Our members at CN recognize the importance of CN's contribution to the Canadian economy and the customers we serve," said TCRC Vice President Roland Hackl. "We are confident that this agreement will benefit our members, CN, and all the people relying on the railway."CN officials are pleased to have reached the agreement without a work disruption, said CN Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Cory."This new contract reinforces CN's commitment to working together with our employees and their representatives to address workplace issues in a mutually beneficial manner," Cory said.

Bombardier inks contract to extend Phoenix airport people mover

The city of Phoenix has awarded a $305 million contract to Bombardier Transportation for an extension of the PHX Sky Train automated people mover system at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The agreement covers a 2.5-mile extension to the airport's rental car center, along with two new stations, an expansion of the system's maintenance facility and the supply of 24 Innovia APM 200 vehicles.

UP to serve Ocean Network at West Coast ports

Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. (ONE) and Ocean Network Express North America have selected Union Pacific Railroad to handle intermodal shipments arriving on container ships at West Coast Ports effective April 1.ONE, which has a global fleet of more than 250 vessels, was established by a merger of Japan's three largest ocean carriers: MOL, NYK and K Line.Under the agreement, containers arriving or departing from West Coast ports will transfer between ONE vessels and UP trains at its on-dock and near-dock facilities in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. UP also will carry ONE shipments arriving at ports in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, UP officials said in a press release."Union Pacific is proud to continue our relationship with the carriers that make up ONE's joint venture and support its changing needs with transportation solutions offering efficient transit times and reliability," said Beth Whited, Union Pacific executive vice president and chief marketing officer. The Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) this month and next will hold a series of town halls via telephone to share details about the FasTracks transit expansion program and other projects underway.

RTD will host 15 telephone town halls, one for each RTD district. The calls will enable RTD's board and staff to speak with members of the communities that the agency serves, RTD officials said in a press release.

The first of Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) four new neo-Panamax cranes came online this week, bringing the port's operating fleet to 27.

The crane started work yesterday on a Hapag Lloyd container vessel capable of carrying 13,300 20-foot-equivalent units. Crane operators moved 2,700 containers on and off the ship during its time at the Port of Savannah, GPA officials said in a press release.

Amtrak to rename Rochester station after late congresswoman

Amtrak will rename its train station in Rochester, New York, after the late U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter, the railroad announced yesterday.

The station will be renamed as a dedication to the congresswoman's career in public service and commitment to leading several projects in northern New York, including the station's development, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific and Smart Sand Inc. have partnered on a long-term lease agreement to operate a frac sand transloading terminal in Van Hook, North Dakota.Smart Sand paid $15.5 million to acquire certain assets at the terminal, according to a company press release.As part of the lease agreement, the company and CP will service the unit train-capable terminal along with other key oil and gas exploration and production basins of North America. Smart Sand officials expect the terminal to be operational next month."This agreement with CP is another step forward toward Smart Sand's goal of being an integrated mine to wellhead supplier of frac sand," said Smart Sand Chief Executive Officer Charles Young."Working with Smart Sand to repurpose this existing rail facility into a high-efficiency sand terminal is well-aligned with our commercial strategy to maximize capacity and asset utilization," said Coby Bullard, CP’s vice president of sales and marketing, merchandise and energy, chemicals and plastics. "It capitalizes on our high-capacity corridor between the nation's premier proppant-producing region and North Dakota's Williston Basin."

European partnership looks to develop smart ties

Crossties capable of data collection will be the development focus of a new partnership between technology and consulting firm Indra and Greenrail, an Italian producer of eco-sustainable crossties.

Two teams have qualified to bid on a project to design, build, finance, operate and maintain an express rail system between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport.

The two eligible teams are O'Hare Xpress LLC and Elon Musk's infrastructure firm The Boring Co. The O'Hare Xpress team consists of Meridiam, Antarctica Capital LLC, JLC Infrastructure, Mott MacDonald and First Transit.

U.S. rail traffic up 10 percent in Week 11

U.S. railroads managed a busy week of traffic ending March 17, with carloads up 7.5 percent to 263,352 units and intermodal volume up 12.7 percent to 273,986 trailers and containers compared with the same week a year ago.

For the week, U.S. rail traffic grew 10 percent to 537,338 carloads and intermodal units compared with volume in the same week in 2017, according to the Association of American Railroads' (AAR) data.

Rail supplier news from Rolls-Royce, Schneider, TRC, Axion and Michael Baker International (March 21)

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Force Motors have signed an agreement to form a joint venture to be known as Force MTU Power Systems Pvt. Ltd. The joint venture will produce Motor engine and Turbine Union's (MTU) 10- and 12-cylinder Series 1600 units, which are suitable for power generation and rail underfloor applications, Rolls-Royce officials said in a press release. Under the agreement, the joint venture will build a dedicated manufacturing facility in Chakan, India. Besides manufacturing Series 1600 units, the joint venture also will build Series 1600 generator sets for the Indian and global markets. The joint venture will handle sales and service of Series 1600 generator for users in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, while Rolls-Royce Power Systems will handle sales and service elsewhere in the world.

Schneider has completed its conversion to a company-owned and -managed chassis fleet with the purchase of more than 15,000 intermodal container chassis over the past four years. The new equipment is among the investments and improvements the company is deploying to deliver "truck-like service" in the intermodal market, Schneider officials said in a press release. The chassis conversion is expected to drive consistent and cost-efficient shipping, increase availability, decrease downtime and boost safety, they said. Schneider also plans to add intermodal containers to its network, as well as drivers, chassis and tractors to support shippers' needs.

UP outlines $87 million capex plan for Louisiana

Union Pacific Railroad's capital expenditures program this year will include $87 million for track and bridge maintenance projects in Louisiana. The 2018 capex plan includes $48 million for track and $18 million for bridge maintenance in the state, UP announced Monday in a press release.Key projects will include $16 million to replace 149,977 railroad ties and install 56,869 tons of ballast on the line between Alexandria and Shreveport, and $12 million to replace 82,152 railroad ties and install 39,693 tons of ballast on the line between Luling and Livonia.Over the past five years, UP has spent more than $396 million on transportation infrastructure in Louisiana.
