CN again lands on Dow Jones Sustainability Index

CN has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DSJI) and on the North America Index for the sixth and ninth consecutive years, respectively, the Class I announced last week.CN is the only Canadian company listed in the transportation and transportation infrastructure sector, CN officials said in a press release.The DJSI surveys sustainability leaders from each industry and analyzes economic, environmental and social performance on issues such as corporate governance, risk management, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards, stakeholder engagement and labor practices.The DJSI World Index selects for inclusion the top 10 percent of the 2,500 largest companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index from each sector based on their sustainability scores."At CN, running a safe and sustainable railroad is at the core of our business culture and community spirit. Canada names negotiator, readies to step in to fix (or sell) HBR line to Churchill

Reiterating the importance of rail to the region, the government of Canada named a negotiator and said it is willing to explore interim funding options or potential sale of the Hudson Bay Rail Line in order to see service restored.

Canada Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr issued a release late last week confirming "Canada's commitment to the residents of northern Manitoba and to the restoration of rail service to Churchill, Manitoba."

WMATA updates progress on service improvements

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) provided an update on service improvements that includes better on-time performance and fewer unscheduled delays.

WMATA credits the progress on new railcars, improved maintenance programs and scheduled enhancements, all positive trends it says show the passenger rail providers is meeting its commitment to move its system "back to good."

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has named Elizabeth O'Neill interim general manager and chief executive officer.

A 22-year MARTA veteran, O'Neill currently serves as the agency's chief legal counsel. She will succeed Keith Parker, who last week announced he will resign to accept a position as president and CEO of Goodwill of North Georgia.

Hurricane Irma: Freight railroads hold traffic, stage equipment for recovery

Norfolk Southern Railway, CSX and Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) spent the weekend monitoring the impact of Hurricane Irma on Florida and the Southeast Coast.According to service advisories issued yesterday:
• FEC suspended all mainline and local train service; all FEC terminals are closed; and pickups and deliveries for FEC highway services are not being accepted until further notice;
• CSX engineering prepared potentially impacted areas, including staging compressors, generators, ballast and work equipment;
• NS held Southeast-bound traffic at yards throughout its southern system. NS also issued embargoes for those locations and staged resources — including ballast trains, equipment and generators — to begin storm recovery efforts when it's safe to do so.Meanwhile, three Texas/Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) Disaster Recovery Centers will open today in the cities of Katy, Baytown and Houston to assist in recovery from Hurricane Harvey, according to a news release issued by the Federal Transit Administration.Recovery specialists from FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration, the state and other agencies will be available at the centers to offer guidance in filling out applications for recovery assistance.
