MTA aligns FASTRACK work with Subway Action Plan on Q line

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) began what its calling "an extensive list of maintenance, cleaning and repair work" yesterday on the Q line.

The maintenance and repair work being performed on the Q line, between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Prospect Park is a part of MTA New York City Transit's FASTRACK program.

MRT Holdings launches two new products

MRT Holdings has introduced two new systems designed to help freight railroads and transit agencies improve track geometry inspection operations and work-zone sign management.

The company says its new Track Geometry System will allow customers to take control of their inspection processes through a simple, cost-effective platform designed for mass deployment on any vehicle. The system features modular hardware, wireless sensors and a modern software utility, all of which the company says will make it easier to perform inspections and automatically transmit reports to a back-office utility. The system utilizes inertial guidance technology, eliminating the need for bulky sensors inside the vehicles. The Track Geometry System is uses a wireless tablet to simply its interface.

Met Council chair rejects bids for Southwest light-rail construction

Metropolitan Council Chair Alene Tchourumoff has recommended rejecting all four civil construction bids for the Minneapolis area's Southwest light-rail project.

The submitted bids didn't meet the council's cost expectations and other requirements for the proposed $1.9 billion project, Met Council officials said in a press release.

WMATA posts on-time performance improvements

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is making improvements in on-time performance, with fewer train offloads and unscheduled delays in its rail service, agency officials announced yesterday.

In August, 89 percent of trips taken on the rail system arrived on time, which marked an improvement since WMATA concluded its SafeTrack emergency maintenance program in June, agency officials said in a press release.

The rail transportation engineering degree program at Penn State Altoona has been sanctioned by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the university announced late last week.The program's validation makes it the only ABET-accredited rail transportation engineering program in the United States, university officials said in a press release."Accreditation from ABET assures students and their families that Penn State Altoona's trailblazing RTE program meets the global standards for engineering education and signals to employers that our students are prepared to be productive and innovative rail transportation professionals," said Chancellor and Dean Lori Bechtel-Wherry. Penn State Altoona's program is the first and only bachelor of science degree program in rail transportation engineering. According to the university's website, the degree program prepares students for careers in railroad track design and maintenance; civil infrastructure design and maintenance; railway construction management; rail-car and locomotive design and maintenance; railway signaling; rail transportation logistics; and network planning and operations.Recognized by the Council for Higher Education, ABET is a global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

Trump nominates CSX's Elliott to head PHMSA

President Donald Trump has nominated CSX Corp. Vice President Howard "Skip" Elliott to serve as administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

A 40-year veteran of the U.S. freight-rail industry, Elliott is group vice president of public safety, health, environment and security for CSX. In the role, Post will ensure that all engineering elements of the state's high-speed rail program are delivered within scope, quality standards, budget and schedule, CHSRA officials said in a press release.

EPA Inc. report: Rail-car outlook is bright

The outlook for rail cars has "brightened considerably" due to strong gains in certain commodity groups in the first half of 2017, according to Economic Planning Associates Inc.'s (EPA) latest report.

Strong traffic is certain to lead to increased investments — including in rolling stock — by the railroads, the report stated.

MTA Metro-North Railroad today will begin a round of infrastructure improvements on the Port Jervis Line.

Crews will perform structural repairs at the Moodna and Woodbury viaducts, as well as remove a defunct overhead bridge at Day Road in Campbell Hall, New York.
