New Jersey Transit yesterday broke ground on the construction of the Raritan River Bridge replacement project, which will replace the existing 112-year-old swing-span bridge that carries NJ Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line trains over the Raritan River between Perth Amboy and South Amboy.

The current bridge was damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and, as a result, has recurring maintenance issues. The new bridge will integrate resilient structural designs and materials to withstand future storm surges and be significantly less vulnerable to severe weather events, according to a press release from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s office.

OneRail poll: Americans support rail expansion

Rail News Home Rail Industry Trends 9/16/2020 Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Americans continue to show "strong" support for rail transportation, according to a new poll conducted on behalf of the OneRail Coalition.Conducted by Engine Insights, the OneRail poll concluded that 75 percent of poll respondents agree that more trips should be made via public transit to address the impact transportation has on climate change, OneRail officials said in a press release.In addition, the poll found that:• a majority of respondents view public transit (64 percent) and passenger rail (65 percent) favorably after the pandemic, with support rising from pre-pandemic levels for public transit (58 percent) and passenger rail (59 percent);
• nearly half agree with investing more in public transit (47 percent) and passenger rail (46 percent); and
• 81 percent support Congress providing more funding to address crossing safety after learning that 95 percent of rail-related deaths involve trespassers on rail tracks or drivers going through grade crossings.The coalition's poll follows a poll conducted by Morning Consult for the Association of American Railroads (AAR), which showed strong support for moving goods by rail and the importance of freight rail in reducing the transportation sector's impact on climate change, OneRail officials said."The results from this survey show strong support among Americans for passenger rail and public transit, even in light of the current pandemic, and that people want to return to travel by train and public transit," said OneRail Director Anne Canby. "These results, alongside findings from the AAR survey, demonstrate the need for federal policies and programs that promote the shift to rail for both freight and passengers."OneRail is a coalition of rail stakeholders who joined together to educate Americans about the benefits of a strong freight- and passenger-rail system.

FreightCar America Inc. announced it has started to permanently close its Shoals manufacturing plant in Cherokee, Alabama. The factory will continue to produce rail cars through the end of the year. After that, production will shift to the company’s Castanos, Mexico, operation. The closure will further align costs and manufacturing capacity with the current realities of depressed rail-car demand, which have been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, FreightCar officials said in a press release. Full closure of the facility is expected by the end of first-quarter 2021.

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) recognized Hanson Professional Services Inc. with the Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence for the firm’s work on the emergency repair of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s collapsed bridge over the Grand River near Brunswick, Missouri. Flooding and a buildup of tree limbs wiped out about 267 feet of the 1,110-foot bridge. Hanson and Massman Construction Co. worked together to help NS rebuild the 103-year-old bridge in 27 days. Meanwhile, AREMA also selected Hanson’s Senior Railroad Engineer Staff Consultant Charley Chambers as AREMA’s 65th honorary member, a distinction that recognizes his contributions to railway engineering and the association. Chambers has been a member of AREMA and its predecessor, the American Railway Engineering Association, for 50 years.
