Tri-Rail to add rail service, reinstate fares

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) on Sept. 16 will increase the Tri-Rail commuter-rail service to include 35 weekday trains and 18 weekend trains as ridership ticks up.

The amended schedule will allow for more frequent service during peak hours, with four-car train sets to allow social distancing. Three-car train sets will run during off peak times.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) last week upgraded its Ridership Information Dashboard to include rail crowding data to enable train riders to better plan their trips so they can practice social distancing.

The dashboard provides the average rail-car crowding levels at each station along a rail line. Data is refreshed weekly with the latest ridership trend based on a two-week rolling average, CTA officials said in a press release.

MTA Metro-North Railroad last week completed replacement of the 6th Avenue Bridge in downtown Mount Vernon, New York, a month ahead of schedule. 

Work to replace the 126-year-old bridge — which carries traffic and pedestrians over Metro-North’s New Haven Line — began in March 2019.

Louisville & Indiana Railroad designated 'military friendly' employer

The Louisville & Indiana Railroad Co. (LIRC) announced last week it has received the 2021 Military Friendly® Employer designation from G.I. Jobs Magazine.Employers earning the designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses to the Military Friendly Companies survey. Final ratings are determined by combining employers' survey scores with assessments of their ability to meet thresholds for applicant, new hire retention, employee turnover and promotion and advancement of veterans and military employees.LIRC President John Goldman said the railroad was "humbled" to receive the designation."For several years, LIRC has made a concerted effort to hire employees with military experience and have veterans in roles, from hourly employees to the senior level," Goldman said in a press release. "Commitment, discipline, solid work ethic and integrity are just some of the characteristics that veterans bring to LIRC."LIRC and other employers with the designation will be showcased in the December issue of G.I. Jobs Magazine.

Sound Transit last week announced Suraj Shetty has joined the Seattle agency as executive director of operations. 

Shetty will oversee transportation and maintenance; facilities and system maintenance; operations assets and technology; and operations support services. He will play a critical role as Sound Transit more than doubles the reach of its Link light-rail service by 2024, agency officials said in a press release.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded the city of Lexington, North Carolina, a $24.9 million grant for the construction of a train and bus station in Lexington's Depot District, members of the state's congressional delegation announced last week.

The grant is being awarded through the USDOT's Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) program.

Amtrak drops off-shore IT provision in RFP

Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer William Flynn told a congressional panel last week that he eliminated a provision in an Amtrak request for proposals (RFP) that would have allowed certain information technology (IT) work to be done overseas.

In response to questions during a House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) subcommittee hearing held last week, Flynn said T&I Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio and other lawmakers recently brought the RFP provision to his attention.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded VisioStack Inc. two contracts for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects to improve safety at grade crossings, VisioStack officials said in a press release. The USDOT awarded a Phase II SBIR for the company’s Aerial Crossing Inspection System (AXIS), and a Phase I SBIR to create an autonomous system to assess inventory at crossings using forward-facing video. AXIS is a grade crossing inspection system that uses unmanned aerial vehicles and machine learning.

Duos Technologies Inc. has been awarded a $1.3 million initial contract by an existing Class I railroad to upgrade its scope of work at an existing Railcar Inspection Portal (rip®) for the purpose of instituting increased automated mechanical inspections. The contract will be executed over the next few months with completion expected before year's end. The contract includes future payments through 2022 for recurring service, maintenance and spare parts components in addition to the base contract value, Duos Technologies officials said in a press release.

Canadian Pacific has recognized 45 shippers for safely transporting hazardous materials by rail in 2019.The companies receiving the Class I's Safe Shipper Award transported at least 500 carloads of hazardous materials (non-intermodal) in 2019 with zero non-accidental release (NAR) incidents, CP officials said in a press release.A hazardous materials NAR is the unintentional release of a hazardous material while in transportation, including loading and unloading while in railroad possession that is not caused by a derailment, collision or other rail-related accident."Encouraging and rewarding safe behavior across every aspect of our business helps us to ensure that our employees and our communities stay safe during the transport of essential products," said Coby Bullard, CP vice president of sales and marketing, merchandise and energy, chemicals and plastics. LA Metro receives federal grant to develop travel rewards program

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded $700,000 to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) to develop a travel rewards research pilot project.

LA Metro is partnering with the Harvard School of Business, the Duke Center for Advanced Hindsight and private sector technology and mobility partners to identify and test the most effective incentives to persuade travelers to skip driving and instead choose transit, ride sharing, walking, bicycling or telecommuting.

NTSB: No criminal activity involved in UP train derailment

The FBI found no criminal activity was involved in a July train derailment in Tempe, Arizona, that resulted in the release of hazardous material and a subsequent fire, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced yesterday in a preliminary report.

Twelve rail cars derailed July 29 as the Union Pacific Railroad train traveled over a wood trestle leading to a steel superstructure bridge that crosses Tempe Town Lake. No train crew members were injured.

Travero, a logistics solutions company affiliated with Alliant Energy, announced yesterday that construction is underway at Logistics Park Cedar Rapids (LPCR) in Fairfax, Iowa.

Scheduled to open in September 2021, LPCR is being built on a 101-acre site. When completed, it will include a 259,000-square-foot, rail-served warehouse for customers to distribute, consolidate or store goods, Travero officials said in a press release.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on Sept. 14 will begin issuing $50 fines to riders who refuse to wear a mask on New York City's subway and commuter trains, the agency announced yesterday.

The policy was announced in response to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order directing MTA to develop a plan to bolster mask compliance.

KCS rejects takeover bid, report says

Kansas City Southern has rejected a $20 billion takeover offer from an investor group, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.Global Infrastructure Partners and the infrastructure arm of private-equity firm Blackstone Group Inc. offered KCS $208 a share, the paper reported, citing people familiar with the situation.KCS rejected the bid, arguing it undervalued the company. KCS turned away an earlier bid that was below $200 a share. The two sides are not in discussions, the paper reported.

FTA awards BUILD grants to KC Streetcar extension, Cleveland RTA rail-car project

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced it has awarded the the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) and the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grants totaling a combined $29.2 million to advance rail projects. 

The FTA awarded KCATA a $14.2 million grant to fund the Kansas City Streetcar’s Riverfront Extension. The project will extend the existing downtown streetcar line about a half mile from 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard to the base of Grand Avenue Bridge on the Berkley Riverfront in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Port of Long Beach, California, (POLB) reported its best August in its 109-year history, marking a strong start to the peak shipping season, port officials reported yesterday.

Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 725,610 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container cargo during the month, a 9.3 percent increase compared with August 2019's level. Imports surged 13 percent to 364,792 TEUs and exports climbed 1 percent to 16,177 TEUs. Empty containers shipped overseas climbed 8.5 percent to 234,642 TEUs.

WMATA, PATCO to reopen all rail stations
