MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) last week completed construction on a two-way grade separated underpass at the Covert Avenue crossing in Long Island, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced late last week.

The project is the second of eight grade crossings LIRR plans to eliminate across its network by 2022 to improve safety and traffic flow and reduce noise from train horns and bells, Cuomo said.

The other railroad crossings that will be replaced are at New Hyde Park Road in New Hyde Park, School Street in New Cassel and two at Willis Avenue in Mineola.

The Convert Avenue reopening also marks the fifth major bridge or grade crossing project to be completed over the past 18 weeks along the LIRR's Main Line as part of the LIRR Expansion Project
