New Jersey Transit yesterday increased weekday peak period service on the Newark light-rail Broad Street extension to allow trains to operate every 10 minutes.  

The service increase follows positive customer feedback on a trial of the enhanced service conducted this past summer during Amtrak trackwork at Penn Station in New York City, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) subsidiary Freightliner was named Rail Freight Operator of the Year at the 2019 Global Freight Awards, the United Kingdom's awards program that recognizes freight-sector excellence.

Freightliner has received the award 12 times since the "readers' vote" was introduced in 2005.

MBTA advances Franklin Line double-track project

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Fiscal and Management Control Board earlier this week approved a $30 million contract with Keolis Commuter Service to complete work on the second and third phases of the Franklin Line’s double-track project.

The project calls for adding double track along the Franklin commuter-rail line from the Norwood Central Station to Franklin Station, ultimately creating a complete double-track line from South Station in Boston to Franklin, Massachusetts. The second track will enable passing freight trains to travel without stopping, which will improve commuter-rail service reliability, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Chao highlights federal steps to improve grade-crossing safety

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao yesterday announced "significant" plans to improve grade crossing safety, including a proposed rulemaking that would require states to draft safety plans for public crossings nationwide.

Chao issued her statement as part a grade-crossing safety summit hosted by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

The work will occur at two locations along the 3rd Street streetcar route at Mill Avenue and Ash Avenue, and require single-tracking on portions of the light-rail route.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) has named Brian Fransen as national division coordinator of the union’s safety task force (STF). He succeeds Carl Fields, who retired Oct. 17.

The STF assists federal agencies in the investigation of rail accidents, helping to determine probable causes and make safety recommendations, BLET officials said in a press release.

WMATA to sell corporate naming rights for planned Silver Line station

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) board is planning to sell corporate naming rights later this month for the future Innovation Center Station on the Silver Line extension in Fairfax County, Virginia, according to a local news report.

A Fortune Global 500 company currently in negotiations to lease a headquarters location adjacent to the station has expressed interest in being the corporate sponsor of the station, according to documents prepared for the WMATA board and obtained by the WTOP-FM radio station.

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) has completed a three-station, $88 million renovation project on the 145th Street Station in Manhattan and the 167th Street and 174th-175th Street stations in the Bronx.

The modernization included upgraded turnstile areas, a reconfigured fare-control area, and installation of security cameras, LED lighting and signage.

Santa Clara VTA pauses pre-revenue service on Berryessa extension

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) last week announced it has suspended most of Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) pre-revenue operations on the 10-mile BART Silicon Valley Berryessa extension in California to create a “more practical” work plan.

Since June, VTA and BART have been working on starting passenger service on the extension before year's end. The work has involved efforts by both agencies to complete final systems modification testing, BART’s system acceptance testing and BART’s pre-revenue operations.

Teamsters Canada announced today on Twitter, after both organizations failed to resolve contract issues.The Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference (TCRC), which represents the workers and is the largest union at CN, issued a 72-hour strike notice to the Class I on Nov. 16 after negotiations stalled.TCRC spokesman Christopher Monette said yesterday that the strike was issued because workers are "hitting a wall on issues related to health and safety," Reuters reported.Also yesterday, after a plea from shippers, Canada's Liberal government sent two ministers to meet with CN and union officials in an effort to avert the strike, according to Reuters.A CN spokesman did not respond to Progressive Railroading's request for a comment prior to deadline.

The decline in U.S. freight-rail traffic continued through October. Stadler signed a contract with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority to develop a hydrogen-powered FLIRT H2 vehicle for the authority’s Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a planned nine mile commuter-rail line between Redlands and San Bernardino, California. The vehicle will consist of two rail cars with a power pack in between them that holds fuel cells and hydrogen tanks. The train, which will be introduced on the planned route in 2024, will be the first hydrogen-powered passenger train to operate in the United States, Stadler officials said in a press release. Trinity Industries Inc. named Gregg Mitchell chief commercial officer of TrinityRail. Mitchell will be responsible for new customer service solutions and product development. He joined Trinity in 2007 and has led multiple businesses for the company, including the Trinity Logistics Group and Trinity Highway Products. Prior to Trinity, he served as an executive in supply chain for companies including Glazers Corp., Gap Inc., and Walmart Inc.Alstom signed a nearly $133 million contract to deliver 19 Coradia Continental electric regional trains to DB Regio AG in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.  Beginning in December 2022, the new trains will be gradually deployed on routes from Karlsruhe to Heilbronn, as well as from Freudenstadt to Herrenberg. The trains will be designed to cope with steep gradients on the route and include high-performance Wi-Fi and large capacity for bicycle storage, Alstom officials said in a press release. Meanwhile, Alstom also extended its contract with SBB, the Swiss national railway company, to maintain its European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment for another 10 years in a contract worth nearly $28 million. Alstom previously installed the ETCS equipment onboard around 500 SBB vehicles and provided maintenance support.Huber+Suhner Inc. has introduced an expanded railway antenna offering following its acquisition of the Kathrein Mobile Communication rail antenna portfolio in May. The merged portfolio now covers all possible radio frequency service applications for railway needs, company officials said in a press release.

CTA aims to support small business contractors

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) last week announced the launch of a program designed to increase small business participation in its large-scale construction projects by providing local entrepreneurs with financial guidance, support and resources to bid on city contracts. 

For some small businesses, working on a large construction project requires resources that many firms don’t have, including cash flow that can enable them to purchase materials ahead of being reimbursed, access to loans and other forms of credit, insurance for larger jobs, and access to IT and administrative supports, CTA officials said in a press release.
